Interior Painting in New Jersey Homes
A fresh coat of paint is one of the most impactful upgrades for your home, and a good interior painter does it room by room, with premium, low-VOC paints and total care for your space.
Interior painting in New Jersey homes usually happens while you still live there, so our interior painters build the process around that. Walls, ceilings, trim, doors and stairwells all get the same routine: furniture is moved and covered, floors are protected, and nail holes, cracks and dings are patched and sanded before stains are spot-primed. Cut lines are brushed by hand, walls are rolled in Benjamin Moore or Sherwin-Williams paint in the sheen that suits the room (our paint sheen guide explains satin vs. eggshell and where each belongs), and the space is cleaned up at the end of every day.
Every free estimate includes an in-home color consultation, so you see samples in your own light before anything is ordered. Wondering about budget? Our article on what it costs to paint a house in NJ and the cost guide's section on the cost to paint a room or a whole interior break down interior pricing per room and per square foot. Trim, baseboards and doors are priced separately from the walls, and our guide to what painting trim and interior doors costs explains why. For how the days are planned, see how long it takes to paint a house. Most of our rooms are painted near home, and two local pages cover the houses there: interior painting in Monmouth County and interior painting in Ocean County. Updating the kitchen at the same time? Interior Painting Services: What We Paint
Interior house painting covers more than walls. Every surface below is part of what our interior painters do, and your estimate lists exactly which ones are included.
Walls
Every wall patched, sanded and spot-primed where needed, cut in by hand at ceilings and trim, and rolled in two finish coats of Benjamin Moore or Sherwin-Williams paint.
Ceilings
Flat ceiling paint that hides roller marks, stain-blocking primer over old water stains, and popcorn texture removed and skimmed if you want it gone; see how we paint ceilings and popcorn ceiling removal cost.
Trim, Baseboards & Crown
Baseboards, crown molding and window and door casings are caulked where they meet the wall, sanded and finished in a durable enamel that wipes clean.
Interior Doors & Railings
Interior doors, frames, stair railings and spindles are cleaned, sanded and finished in enamel, with hardware removed or masked so it stays paint-free.
Stairwells & Two-Story Foyers
Tall walls and ceilings over a staircase are set up with the right ladders or staging so they can be painted safely without marking the treads or railings.
Drywall & Sheetrock Repair
Nail pops, cracks, dents and small holes are repaired as part of the prep. For larger damage, see drywall repair cost in NJ.
Basements, Staircases, Ceilings and More
An interior job often covers more than the walls. Each of these is listed and priced on the same written estimate as the rest of the work.
Basement Painting
Concrete and block walls, drywall, and exposed joist ceilings. Moisture is checked first, because paint will not fix a damp wall and we are not a waterproofing company. Dry masonry then takes a masonry primer and breathable paint. See painting basement walls and ceilings; for the slab, see our epoxy floor coatings.
Staircase & Banister Refinishing
Handrails, balusters, newel posts, stringers and risers are cleaned, sanded and refinished in a hard-wearing enamel, with the treads protected. They are the most-handled wood in the house, so they get trim-grade paint, not wall paint.
Wainscoting & Chair Rail
Existing wainscoting, beadboard and chair rail are caulked where they meet the wall, sanded and finished in enamel, often in a different color from the wall above. We paint them; building or installing new panelling is carpentry and not something we do.
Crown Moulding Installation
New crown moulding installed where a room has none or where the old trim is too small, then caulked, filled and painted along with the rest of the room, so the room is finished by one crew.
Popcorn Ceiling Removal
Textured ceilings scraped, skimmed smooth and painted flat. A ceiling from before the 1980s can contain asbestos, and nobody can tell by looking, so it has to be tested before anyone scrapes it. Our guide to popcorn ceiling removal cost in NJ covers testing and the alternatives.
Wallpaper Removal
Old wallpaper stripped, the adhesive washed off, torn drywall facing sealed, and the walls primed and painted. We remove wallpaper but do not hang it. See wallpaper removal cost in NJ.
Shore Rental Turnovers
Shore rental houses repainted between seasons: scuffed walls, trim and doors refreshed so the house is ready before the next booking. Tell us your rental calendar at the estimate.
How We Prepare and Protect Your Home
Most of a professional interior paint job is preparation and protection. This is the order every room follows; most single rooms are finished in a day and a full interior in two to five days.
Protect
Furniture is moved to the center of the room and covered, floors are covered and taped, and switch plates, outlet covers and hardware come off.
Repair
Nail holes, dents and cracks are patched and sanded smooth, and gaps where trim meets walls and ceilings are caulked.
Prime
Every patch and stain is spot-primed, with a full primer coat wherever a big color change or the surface needs it.
Paint
Two finish coats, cut in by hand at every edge, ceilings first, then walls, then trim and doors.
Clean Up
The work area is cleaned at the end of every day, so you can use your home in the evening.
Walkthrough
We walk every room with you at the end and touch up anything you point out before we pack up.
Choosing Paint and Sheen
We use premium interior lines from Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams, such as Regal Select, Aura, Emerald and Duration Home, all low-VOC. In finished appearance the top lines from both brands are closer to each other than to their own entry-level paint; our Benjamin Moore vs Sherwin-Williams comparison explains the differences. If the smell is what you are weighing, our guide to paint fumes, VOCs and when a room is ready to sleep in sets out what low-VOC does and does not mean.
Sheen matters as much as brand. Eggshell suits most living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms; satin stands up better in kids' rooms, mudrooms and busy hallways; ceilings are flat; and trim and doors take a satin or semi-gloss enamel. Names do not match between brands, so our satin vs eggshell sheen guide compares the actual numbers.
Room-by-Room Interior Painting Guide
- Living and dining rooms: Eggshell walls, which look close to flat and forgive older plaster and patched drywall.
- Bedrooms: Eggshell in adult rooms; satin in kids’ rooms, which also tend to need repainting every few years.
- Kitchens: A scrubbable finish that handles grease and wiping. Cabinets are a separate, sprayed process. See kitchen cabinet painting.
- Bathrooms: A moisture-resistant paint, and a working exhaust fan, so mildew does not come back.
- Hallways, stairs and mudrooms: Satin walls and enamel trim, because these walls take the most scuffs.
- Ceilings: Flat white or a tinted ceiling paint, with stain-blocking primer over any old water stain.

Most single-room projects are completed in one day. A full-home interior typically takes two to five days depending on the square footage, number of rooms, and level of prep work required.
We ask that you remove small and fragile items from the room. Our crew will move larger furniture to the center and cover everything with protective drop cloths before we begin.
Yes. We carry a full selection of low-VOC and zero-VOC premium paints from trusted brands like Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams — ideal for families with children, pets, or sensitivities.
Interior painting is priced by the room and the surfaces in it rather than by a flat rate. The main factors are the size of the room and ceiling height, how many surfaces are included (walls only, or ceilings, trim and doors too), how much patching and priming the walls need, color changes that take an extra coat, and the paint line you choose. Every estimate is free and itemized, and our cost guide sets out typical New Jersey price ranges.
Yes. Ceilings, baseboards, crown molding, window and door casings, interior doors, railings and two-story stairwells and foyers are all part of what we paint. Trim and doors get an enamel suited to high-touch surfaces, and tall stairwells are set up with the right ladders or staging so the walls and ceiling can be painted safely without marking the treads.
Walls, ceilings, baseboards, crown molding, window and door casings, interior doors, railings and stairwells, along with the prep they need: furniture moved and covered, floors protected, holes and cracks patched and sanded, gaps caulked, stains spot-primed and two finish coats cut in by hand. Your written estimate lists exactly which rooms and surfaces are included.
Eggshell for most living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms, satin for kids’ rooms, mudrooms and busy hallways, flat for ceilings, and a satin or semi-gloss enamel for trim and doors. Sheen names vary between brands, so we confirm the exact product and sheen with you at the color consultation.
Yes, that is how most of our interior work is done, so your interior painter plans the job around your household. We work room by room, keep the rest of the house usable, clean up at the end of every day and use low-VOC paints. Paint feels dry within hours, but treat new walls gently and avoid scrubbing them for the first two weeks while the finish cures.
Yes. Nail pops, cracks, dents and small holes in drywall and sheetrock are patched and sanded as part of every interior job. Larger drywall repairs, water-damaged ceilings and popcorn ceiling removal are quoted separately on the estimate. Plaster is a different trade and not something we take on — on an older plaster-walled home we will tell you at the estimate what needs a plasterer first.
Yes. NJ Painting Co. is a family-owned, licensed and fully insured residential painting contractor based in Morganville, with more than 20 years of experience painting homes in Monmouth, Middlesex, Ocean, Mercer, Somerset and Burlington counties, plus Union, Essex, Hudson, Bergen and Passaic in North Jersey.
Absolutely. Every interior project includes a complimentary color consultation. We help you explore palettes, finishes, and accent options so you feel confident before the first coat goes on.
Yes. Concrete and block walls, drywall and exposed joist ceilings are all painted, with moisture checked first and a masonry primer and breathable paint on dry masonry. We are not a waterproofing company, so a damp or leaking wall has to be fixed before it is painted, and a basement floor can be coated with epoxy instead.
Yes, both. Wallpaper is stripped, the adhesive washed off and the walls primed and painted; we remove wallpaper but do not hang it. Popcorn ceilings are scraped, skimmed smooth and painted, after a ceiling from before the 1980s has been tested for asbestos.
