Ocean Gate is one of the smallest boroughs in Ocean County: about half a square mile on the south bank of the Toms River where it widens into Barnegat Bay, with Berkeley Township on its other sides. It began as a railroad destination. Pennsylvania Railroad trains brought visitors to what was then called Good Luck Point, and the summer cottages they built became the borough, which was incorporated from part of Berkeley in 1918. The town still has that resort-colony layout of narrow lots, short streets ending at the water, and a boardwalk along the river that was largely rebuilt after Superstorm Sandy. Today it has fewer than two thousand residents and a mix of year-round homes, weekend places and rentals.
Most of the housing is bungalows, capes, ranches and a few colonials. Many started as seasonal cottages and were later winterized, extended or raised, which shows on the outside: one wall might be original cedar shingle, the next vinyl from the 1990s, and the addition fiber-cement. Each material needs its own primer and its own prep, so we work through the house surface by surface instead of spraying one product over everything. The river side gets damp wind off the bay, and salt and mildew on those walls need washing off before any paint goes on. We finish with premium Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams exterior systems suited to the exposure, and anything built before 1978 gets lead-safe handling: containment, wet scraping, HEPA cleanup and a daily clean-down.
Kitchens are where many Ocean Gate projects begin. A cottage kitchen tends to be small, built in place, and fitted with cabinets that are structurally fine but finished in dated stain or worn-out paint. Replacing them in a tight kitchen means demolition, and often some flooring and plaster work too. Painting or refinishing the existing cabinetry gives a smooth, durable, factory-style finish for a fraction of the cost, usually without a week of disruption. We remove the doors and drawer fronts to spray them, prepare and paint the boxes in place, and can change hardware at the same time. Our guide to refinishing versus painting versus refacing goes through the costs and trade-offs if you are still deciding.
Beyond the kitchen, we repaint interiors in light, easy-to-clean finishes for houses that see sand and summer guests, refinish or install hardwood, and pour epoxy floors in the garages and utility rooms that take the most beach traffic. In a borough this small, the off-season is the best time for interior work and spring is the best time to book exteriors. NJ Painting Co. is family-owned and based in Morganville, licensed and fully insured, with more than twenty years in the trade. Every Ocean Gate estimate is free, includes a color consultation, and the work carries a two-year workmanship warranty.
