Fairfield in Essex County, not the Cumberland County township of the same name, was first settled by Dutch farmers and was part of the Horseneck Tract. The Van Ness House, built around 1720, and the Fairfield Dutch Reformed Church, whose congregation dates from 1720 and whose present building went up in 1804, still stand from that period. For most of its history the area was called Caldwell Township, and it only took the name Fairfield in 1963. Today the township covers about ten square miles, split by Interstate 80 and Route 46, and is home to Essex County Airport. Its homes sit alongside a large commercial and industrial district.
The Passaic River runs along Fairfield's western side, and a large part of the township is in its floodplain. Floods after heavy storms, including the remnants of Hurricane Ida in 2021, have forced evacuations in some neighborhoods. That shapes the painting work. Basements and lower walls that have taken on water need to dry fully and be checked for moisture before any coating goes on, and paint applied over damp masonry or wet drywall will blister. We test first and use primers and masonry coatings suited to below-grade walls. Garage and basement floors are a good fit for epoxy, which seals the concrete and cleans up easily, as long as the slab is tested for moisture before it is coated.
Most of Fairfield's houses are post-war ranches, capes and split-levels, with colonials from the 1970s and 80s and some newer construction. House painting in Fairfield usually means vinyl or aluminum siding with wood trim that needs scraping, priming and caulking, plus a vinyl-safe color for anyone changing the shade of their siding. Houses built before 1978 get lead-safe prep on painted trim. Inside, we repaint full interiors, refinish kitchen cabinets and refinish or replace hardwood floors.
For businesses along Route 46 and in the township's industrial parks, our commercial painting crews can work evenings or weekends on offices, showrooms and warehouses so operations are not interrupted, and we coat working floors in epoxy. NJ Painting Co. is a family-owned company based in Morganville in Monmouth County, and we travel north for jobs in Fairfield.
