Westfield was formed as a township in 1794 and became a town in 1903. It covers under seven square miles and had about thirty-one thousand residents at the 2020 census, and the Raritan Valley Line through its downtown made it a commuter suburb early on. Much of the town's housing reflects that. Stoneleigh Park, laid out around 1904, is a loop of thirty houses on about twenty acres, the earliest of them Colonial Revival homes built between 1904 and 1914, and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Wychwood, developed in the 1920s, has Georgian, Dutch Colonial, Tudor and Mission-style houses. Around them are streets of foursquares, colonials and later houses from every decade since.
A lot of what Westfield homeowners ask about is the kitchen. Many of these houses have solid wood or plywood cabinet boxes in good condition behind a dated finish, and a sprayed finish gives them the look of factory cabinetry without the cost or the weeks of disruption that come with a remodel. We remove and label doors and drawer fronts and spray them off-site, then clean, degrease, scuff and bond-prime the boxes in the kitchen with everything else masked. The topcoat is a cabinet-grade enamel that cures hard enough to handle daily use. Oak gets grain-filled if you want it smooth. Our guide to cabinet refinishing versus painting versus refacing covers when each one makes sense.
Older Westfield houses need patient prep inside and out. Colonial Revival and Tudor homes carry original millwork, plaster walls, stucco and half-timbering, and wood windows, and nearly all of it predates 1978, so lead-safe practices are standard for us: containment, wet scraping, HEPA cleanup and a site cleaned daily. Old oil paint on trim gets a bonding primer before any waterborne topcoat. On Tudors, the stucco panels and the timber trim move differently and are prepared differently, and we caulk the joints between them with a flexible product so they stay sealed.
We also repaint full interiors, refinish hardwood floors, coat garage floors in epoxy, and paint offices and storefronts after hours. NJ Painting Co. is a family-owned company based in Morganville in Monmouth County. We travel to Westfield for jobs, and we are licensed and fully insured with more than twenty years in the trade. Every Westfield estimate is free, written, and separates prep from finish coats, and the work carries a two-year workmanship warranty.
