Bordentown is really two places. Bordentown City is under a square mile where the Delaware River meets Crosswicks Creek and Blacks Creek. It grew from the transport business Joseph Borden ran between Philadelphia and New York in the eighteenth century, was incorporated as a borough in 1825 and became a city in 1867. Thomas Paine lived here at various times, and a statue of him stands on Prince Street. Clara Barton opened one of New Jersey's first free public schools here in 1852. Joseph Bonaparte, the former King of Spain, lived on his Point Breeze estate at the edge of town for seventeen years. Bordentown Township surrounds the city on three sides and is mostly newer housing. When people search for a residential painter near Bordentown, they usually mean either one, so this page covers both and our free estimate starts with which one you are in.
In the city, along Farnsworth Avenue and the side streets off it, the houses are close together and old, many of them eighteenth- and nineteenth-century brick and frame row and twin houses with painted wood cornices, windows and doors. Exterior work here is preservation work. We scrape back to sound paint, keep original trim profiles rather than stripping them bare, repair rot instead of caulking over it, and prime with products that let old wood breathe. Brick needs a decision of its own, since painting it is hard to undo, and our guide to painting brick houses covers what to weigh first. Nearly everything in the city predates 1978, so we use lead-safe practices as standard: containment, wet scraping, HEPA cleanup and a site cleaned every day. Houses near the creeks and the river get damp air, and we treat mildew before priming.
Bordentown Township is a different job. Most of its homes are colonials, townhomes and twins from the 1980s onward, with vinyl or fiber-cement siding, builder-grade trim, two-story foyers and flat builder paint inside. The usual requests are a first proper interior repaint in colors the owners chose, cabinet refinishing for a kitchen that is sound but dated, a refresh of front doors, shutters and trim, and an epoxy floor for the garage. On vinyl siding we use vinyl-safe colors so the panels don't warp, and on fiber-cement we seal cut ends that were left raw during construction.
Whichever side of the line you live on, the work is done with premium Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams products and planned around your household's schedule, with rooms usually ready to use the same evening. We also refinish and install hardwood, and paint storefronts and offices on Farnsworth Avenue after hours so they don't lose trading time. NJ Painting Co. is family-owned, licensed and fully insured, with more than twenty years in the trade. Every Bordentown estimate is free, includes a color consultation, and the work carries a two-year workmanship warranty.
