Navesink is a neighborhood of Middletown Township in Monmouth County, established around 1830 as Riceville, and it is one of the township's five designated historic districts, alongside Chapel Hill, Locust, Monmouth Hills and Middletown Village. The village grew up along Monmouth Avenue, which the township describes as part of the old King's Highway and the backbone of the district. Middletown's survey counts 96 contributing properties in the district, including churches, a school and houses, and notes that the earlier houses are simpler than those built later in the nineteenth century. The Navesink Historic District has also been on the National Register since 1975, covering buildings from 1800 to 1924 in Greek Revival and Late Victorian styles. At its center is All Saints' Memorial Church, completed in 1864 to Richard Upjohn's design, listed on the National Register in 1974 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987.

Averaged over 2020 to 2024, the Census Bureau's American Community Survey counts about 730 homes in the Navesink area, with a wide margin of error because the sample is small. It dates about 40 percent of them to 1939 or earlier and 63 percent to before 1980, while about a fifth are from the 2010s. Most of the area falls in the 07716 ZIP code, with the rest in 07760. To the west, the Shingle Style summer houses along Navesink River Road belong to the neighboring Locust historic district, which became a summer estate area after the Civil War.

In a designated district, Middletown requires property owners planning additions or modifications to obtain a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Landmarks Commission. The township's pages do not say whether a repaint in new colors on its own needs one, so ask the commission before you settle on colors or replace any trim, rails or windows. In a streetscape this close to the road, the trim color does more work than the body color anyway.
