Basking Ridge is not a municipality of its own. It is the main village of Bernards Township, and the name is commonly used for most of the township. Bernards also takes in the smaller sections of Liberty Corner, Lyons and West Millington. Presbyterian settlers arrived in the 1720s, and the township received its charter from George II in 1760. The village center still shows that age. The Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church is a Greek Revival building from 1839, and the white oak in its churchyard, thought to be about six hundred years old, stood until it was taken down in 2017. The Brick Academy, built as a school in 1809, is now the township's history museum. In December 1776 General Charles Lee was captured by British cavalry at Widow White's Tavern here, one of the odder episodes of the Revolution.
That history matters for paint. The older houses around the village center and along the old roads carry wood clapboard, deep porches and many layers of paint over trim from long before 1978, and we treat them that way: lead-safe containment, wet scraping, HEPA cleanup, and repairs to sills and porch parts before any primer goes on. Beyond the village, most of Bernards Township is later suburban housing on large, often wooded lots, and the requests there are the familiar ones: a first full repaint of builder trim, chalked siding that needs washing and testing, tall foyers and stairwells, and a kitchen of solid cabinets that only needs a new finish.
The land itself shapes the exterior work. The Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge and the Passaic River line the eastern side of the township and the Dead River runs along the south, so houses near them sit in damp air with heavy tree cover. North walls on those lots stay wet for hours after rain, mildew comes back quickly on paint applied over a dirty surface, and soft wood shows up first at fascia ends, sill joints and the bottoms of door casings. We wash and treat mildew, let the wood dry properly, replace rot rather than caulking over it, and use mildew-resistant premium finishes on the shaded faces. On a large Basking Ridge house those walls get scoped separately from the sunny ones, because they need more prep and the price should show it.
Indoors, we repaint in scrubbable Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams finishes, stage tall rooms properly instead of stretching a ladder, and refinish cabinets and hardwood floors where they are still sound. NJ Painting Co. is family-owned, licensed and fully insured, based in Morganville in Monmouth County. Every Basking Ridge estimate is free and written, separates prep from finish coats, and the work carries a two-year workmanship warranty.
