Watchung is a borough of about six square miles in the eastern corner of Somerset County, incorporated in 1926 and home to roughly 6,400 people at the 2020 census. It takes its name from the Watchung Mountains, the ridges that run through it, and it sits where Somerset meets Union County, bordering Warren, Green Brook and North Plainfield on one side and Berkeley Heights, Scotch Plains and Plainfield on the other. Mountain Boulevard and Valley Road carry County Route 527 the length of the borough, Interstate 78 cuts across its northwest corner, and the Stony Brook runs down to Watchung Lake and over Wetumpka Falls before it joins the Green Brook.
