Matawan is a Monmouth County borough at the head of Matawan Creek, entirely within ZIP code 07747. The settlement grew around docks on the creek and was known as Middletown Point until the post office took the name Matawan in 1865. The borough itself was formed in 1895 from Matawan Township, which is today's Aberdeen. Lake Matawan and Lake Lefferts were both made by damming streams in the 1920s, and the creek is where the shark attacks of July 12, 1916, took place, about eleven miles from the ocean.
Main Street holds the oldest buildings. The Major John Burrowes Mansion at 94 Main Street, traditionally dated to 1723, has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1972 and is now a museum and the home of the Matawan Historical Society. Matawan Station, between Main and Atlantic Avenues, was listed in 1984. The borough's Historical Sites Commission looks after borough-owned sites, and it also reviews exterior changes to buildings in the downtown preservation district along Main Street. Its December 2024 minutes record a revised district ordinance still in draft, and advice to an owner whose original siding had been covered in vinyl: take the vinyl off the front and repair what is underneath. If your house is on or near Main Street, ask the borough whether your plans need review before work begins.
Away from Main Street the housing is mostly post-war. The Census Bureau's American Community Survey for 2020 to 2024 counts about 4,000 homes in Matawan and dates 24 percent of them to the 1960s and 20 percent to the 1970s. About 9 percent were built in 1939 or earlier, and 12 percent are from the 2010s. In all, two homes in three, 66 percent, were built before 1980.
That mix decides the prep. Older wood clapboard and trim downtown is scraped to sound paint, repaired where soft and primed bare before finish coats, rather than covered over. Houses from the 1960s and 1970s usually need fascia, soffits and doors brought back, and interiors where walls, ceilings, baseboards and banisters have taken decades of use. Inside, a kitchen with solid cabinet boxes can be refinished with a sprayed enamel instead of replaced. Where a home is in a condominium or townhouse association, check its rules on exterior colors first. On any house built before 1978, the EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting rule applies: a firm paid to disturb more than six square feet of paint per room inside, or twenty square feet outside, must be certified. NJ Painting Co. is not EPA Lead-Safe Certified. When an older Matawan job would disturb more than that, we say so at the estimate and point you to a certified contractor.
We work with premium Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams coatings. NJ Painting Co. is family-owned and based in Morganville, a short drive down Route 79, and every Matawan estimate is free.
