Hazlet is a Monmouth County township created in 1848 as Raritan Township, from part of Middletown. Holmdel, Aberdeen, Keyport, Keansburg and Union Beach were all carved from its land later, and in 1967 voters renamed what was left Hazlet, after Dr. John Hazlett, whose estate stood near today's Holmdel Road. Most of the township is in ZIP code 07730, with about an eighth in 07734. Its unincorporated communities include Centerville, North Centerville, South Keyport, Tiltons Corner and West Keansburg.
Hazlet's housing arrived almost all at once. The township had 2,763 residents in 1950, 15,334 in 1960 and 22,239 by 1970. The Census Bureau's American Community Survey for 2020 to 2024 counts about 8,000 homes and dates 32 percent of them to the 1950s and 22 percent to the 1960s, more than half the housing in two decades. Altogether 78 percent were built before 1980, and only about 6 percent since 2000.
A house built in the 1950s has had seventy years of exterior paint. Where aluminum or vinyl siding has gone on since, it can be painted, but only in colors and products the siding allows. Painted wood trim, doors and porch posts need loose paint scraped off, joints recaulked and bare spots primed. Inside, sixty and seventy years of repainting leave built-up layers on trim and doors and walls with old patches that need skimming before a smooth finish. Water is the other concern. News 12 reported in July 2026 that torrential rain flooded at least one Hazlet home badly enough that its walls and insulation had to be replaced. After water damage, we check that walls are dry, repair or replace the drywall, and use a stain-blocking primer before the finish coats. Kitchens of the 1950s and 1960s that have had their cabinets kept are good candidates for refinishing rather than replacement.
Nearly four Hazlet homes in five fall under the federal pre-1978 lead rule. The EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting rule requires certification for any paid contractor who disturbs more than six square feet of paint per room inside, or more than twenty square feet on the exterior, of housing built before 1978. NJ Painting Co. is not EPA Lead-Safe Certified. If your project needs that much scraping or sanding, a certified contractor has to do it, and you will hear that from us at the estimate rather than halfway through. We found no local historic district or preservation commission in Hazlet, so the color of a private house is yours to choose, subject to any association rules.
We paint with premium Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams products, refinish kitchen cabinets and coat garage floors in epoxy. NJ Painting Co. is a family-owned company based in Morganville, and every Hazlet estimate is free.
