Medford is a Burlington County township of almost forty square miles, incorporated on March 1, 1847, from part of Evesham Township. It has a single ZIP code, 08055. The borough of Medford Lakes, incorporated in 1939 from Medford land, is a separate municipality surrounded by the township, and Medford itself takes in place names such as Taunton Lake, Birchwood Lakes and Medford Lakes in the Pines. Medford is one of the South Jersey municipalities in the Pinelands National Reserve, and part of the township lies in the state-designated Pinelands Area.
Medford's housing comes mostly from the 1970s on. The Census Bureau's American Community Survey for 2020 to 2024 counts about 9,800 homes in the township and dates 26 percent of them to the 1970s, the busiest decade, followed by the 1980s at 19 percent and the 1990s at 13 percent. Just under half, 48 percent, were built before 1980, and about 5 percent before 1940.
Medford Village is the township's historic shopping area, with older homes around it. The township's land use code designates a historic district there, mapped in the Medford Village Historic Preservation and Growth Plan, with the stated aim of preserving structures of historic and architectural value; we could not read the full section to confirm what exterior work needs review, so if your house is in the village district, ask the township before you change colors or materials. In 2004 the Medford Historic Advisory Board placed interpretive markers at 63 historic sites and structures. Kirby's Mill, at Church and Fostertown Roads, has been on the National Register since 1971. If your house is in a lake community or a development with its own association, check that association's exterior rules too.
Water is the local theme. The National Weather Service notes that tidal influence on the Rancocas Creek reaches inland as far as Kirby Mills on the Southwest Branch, and homes on lake lots and under tall pines stay damp longer after rain. On those houses we wash mildew off and let the siding dry before scraping, replace failed caulk, and flag soft trim instead of painting over it, then finish with premium Benjamin Moore or Sherwin-Williams exterior coatings. Inside, 1970s and 1980s kitchens are good candidates for cabinet refinishing, and garages take epoxy floor coatings. For homes built before 1978 there is also federal law to respect. The EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting rule requires an EPA-certified firm for paid work that disturbs more than six square feet of paint per room inside, or twenty square feet outside, on that housing. NJ Painting Co. is not EPA Lead-Safe Certified. Where a Medford job needs that much old paint disturbed, it calls for a certified contractor, and we will say so before any work is agreed.
