Red Bank is a Monmouth County borough on the south bank of the Navesink River, with one ZIP code, 07701. It was part of Shrewsbury until 1870 and became a borough of its own in 1908. It grew as a river port, and its business owners built their homes just east of Broad Street, on Washington, Spring, Wallace, Mount and Mechanic Streets. After a fire on November 3, 1882, Broad Street was rebuilt in brick. Count Basie was born at 229 Mechanic Street in 1904, and the Count Basie Center for the Arts on Monmouth Street opened in 1926 as the Carlton Theatre.
The houses are old. Census estimates for 2020 to 2024, from the American Community Survey, count about 6,200 homes in the borough and date 32 percent of them to 1939 or earlier, and 80 percent to before 1980. Fewer than one in ten has been built since 1990. The borough has a Historic Preservation Commission, set up in 2009, and two historic districts: Broad Street, where most of the roughly eighty buildings date from before 1890, and Washington Street, which the borough describes as holding its oldest housing. Red Bank also has the T. Thomas Fortune House, a National Historic Landmark.
That matters for paint. The commission's Certificate of Appropriateness application lists painting, exterior walls and siding, and eaves among the work it covers, and the borough says all owners building or modifying a structure in a district must apply, with ordinary maintenance and repair decided case by case by the administrative officer. If your house or storefront is on Washington Street or Broad Street, file with the commission before the work is scheduled, not after.
Old wood, damp river air and shade from mature trees are why exterior work in Red Bank depends on prep. We wash mildew off and let the wall dry, scrape back to sound paint, point out soft sills and trim rather than caulking over them, and prime bare wood before premium Benjamin Moore or Sherwin-Williams finish coats. Porch columns, railings, shutters and front doors are finished on their own. With four homes in five built before 1978, the federal lead rule also applies. The EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting rule says a firm paid to disturb more than six square feet of paint in a room, or more than twenty square feet outside, on a pre-1978 house must be EPA-certified. NJ Painting Co. is not EPA Lead-Safe Certified, so where a house needs that, you will need a certified contractor for it, and we will tell you that up front.
Inside, we bring back baseboards, casings and staircase banisters, repair drywall seams, and repaint storefronts and offices for the borough's businesses. NJ Painting Co. is a family-owned company based in Morganville, and every Red Bank estimate is free.

They treated my home like their own. They were patient with my requests and so pleasant to work with. I had gotten 3 different estimates for the work, they were all in the same ballpark, however NJ Painting offered a free consultation with an interior designer that was incredible. I went with all her suggestions and my house looks great! I could not be more satisfied with the outcome.”
