Lakewood is an Ocean County township with one ZIP code, 08701, covering about 25 square miles. Its story starts with iron: Joseph W. Brick revived an ironworks here in 1833 and called it Bergen Iron Works. The settlement was named Bricksburg in 1865 and renamed Lakewood in 1880, and the township was incorporated in 1892 from part of Brick Township. In the decades after 1880 it was a fashionable winter resort. The Laurel House hotel opened that year, and John D. Rockefeller bought a property in 1902 that later became Ocean County Park.
The best-known survivor of that era is Georgian Court. Architect Bruce Price designed the estate for George Jay Gould between 1899 and 1902, with a 152-acre landscape plan, and since 1924 it has been home to a university. It was listed on the National Register in 1978, and the Strand Theatre on Clifton Avenue followed in 1982. We did not find a township historic preservation commission or local district, so on a private house the exterior color is up to the owner, or to the association where there is one.
Lakewood today is defined by growth. Its population went from 92,843 in 2010 to 135,158 in 2020, a rise of about 46 percent. The Census Bureau's American Community Survey for 2020 to 2024 counts about 33,800 homes in the township and dates 42 percent of them to 2000 or later, with the 2010s the single busiest decade at 22 percent. Another 14 percent are from the 1990s, and 35 percent were built before 1980.
So painting here runs on two tracks. Newer homes usually need their first full repaint after builder paint, which means filling nail pops and drywall seams, cutting crisp lines on new trim, and replacing flat builder finishes with scrubbable premium Benjamin Moore or Sherwin-Williams paint in halls, kitchens and children's rooms. Older houses need more prep: scraping and spot-priming exterior wood, and a bonding primer where old oil-based trim enamel sits under later coats. We also repair drywall, paint ceilings and interior doors, and refinish kitchen cabinets with a sprayed enamel.
On the older third of the housing, the EPA's lead rule applies. A firm paid to disturb paint on a home built before 1978 must be certified once the work passes six square feet in any room or twenty square feet outside. NJ Painting Co. is not EPA Lead-Safe Certified; where a Lakewood job goes past those limits, we will tell you a certified contractor is needed. NJ Painting Co. is family-owned and based in Morganville, and every Lakewood estimate is free and written.
