Kitchen Cabinet Refinishing in Ocean County

Kitchen cabinet refinishing in Ocean County is a shop process carried out inside your house, and a county of shore cottages, rebuilt bayfront homes and adult communities gives it a particular shape. NJ Painting Co. is a family-owned painting contractor based in Morganville, in business since 2004, and we refinish cabinets from Point Pleasant and Brick down through Toms River, Bayville, Ocean Gate, Waretown and Stafford, and west in Jackson, Lakewood, Manchester and Berkeley. Most of the kitchens we are called to here have sound boxes, a layout that still works, and a finish that has simply aged out: orange oak, a yellowed white, a 1980s honey stain. That is exactly the kitchen refinishing exists for.

Refinishing means the doors and drawer fronts come off and are numbered to their openings, the hardware is bagged by location, every surface is degreased and scuff-sanded, repairs are made, and the frames, doors and fronts are sprayed rather than brushed. That is what produces an even, factory-like surface a brush cannot. Every Ocean County estimate is free, includes an in-home color consultation in your own kitchen light, and comes back as a written scope. We finish with Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams cabinet enamels, and the work carries a two-year workmanship warranty. Call (732) 239-0932.

What a cabinet refinishing quote covers here

  • A free in-home estimate: we count doors and drawer fronts, check what the cabinets are made of, open boxes to check their condition, and put color samples in your kitchen light.
  • Hardware removed and bagged by location, every door numbered to the opening it came out of.
  • Counters, appliances, backsplash and floors masked and covered, with the sink and refrigerator kept reachable.
  • Every surface degreased and rinsed, then scuff-sanded; oak grain-filled where you want the pores gone.
  • Dings, open joints and blown-out hinge screw holes filled and repaired before any coating.
  • Bonding or stain-blocking primer chosen for the cabinet material, sanded smooth.
  • Doors, drawer fronts, face frames, end panels, islands and pantry units sprayed in Benjamin Moore or Sherwin-Williams cabinet enamel.
  • The spray area ventilated and the room's humidity managed while the coats go on and flash off.
  • Doors rehung, hinges adjusted so the reveals line up, hardware reinstalled or new knobs and pulls fitted with old holes filled.
  • A walkthrough covering care and cure times, and a two-year workmanship warranty.

Humidity, salt and cure time at the shore

The thing that genuinely separates cabinet refinishing in Ocean County from the same job thirty miles inland is the air. Waterborne cabinet enamels dry to the touch in hours but keep hardening for weeks β€” Benjamin Moore says its waterborne alkyd can take up to thirty days to reach full hardness β€” and that curing is slower in the humidity that sits over Barnegat Bay and the lagoons through the summer. So we control the room rather than hope. The spray area is masked and ventilated, the house's air conditioning or a dehumidifier runs while coats go on and flash off, and we space the coats to the conditions in the kitchen that day instead of to a fixed schedule.

Cure time is also why we are blunt about the first few weeks after a shore kitchen is finished. Doors are rehung and the kitchen is usable, but the enamel is still hardening: no hard scrubbing, nothing heavy parked against a door, and shelf liner rather than bare contact under anything that slides. In a summer house this works in your favor, because the finish gets its quietest weeks exactly when nobody is there.

Salt shows up in the hardware rather than the paint. On houses near open water, hinge screws, hinge plates and older pulls corrode, and a cabinet door that no longer closes square will not be fixed by coating it. We check hinges at the estimate, fill and re-drill blown-out screw holes, adjust every hinge on rehang so the reveals line up, and tell you where the old hardware is past saving. If you are changing knobs or pulls, the old holes are filled before the finish goes on, not after.

The kitchens this county actually has

A lot of Ocean County housing went up between the 1950s and the 1970s, and those kitchens have a recognizable shape: small galley or L-shaped runs, solid birch, maple or oak boxes that were built better than anything at a big-box store today, a drop soffit above the uppers, and a door count low enough that the whole kitchen can be sprayed and rehung in a few days. Refinishing makes obvious sense on cabinets like that, because the carcasses are the part you would be paying most to replace. Red oak is the common wood, and its open grain shows through paint unless it is grain-filled and sanded flat first β€” some homeowners want that texture gone and some like it, so we ask rather than assume.

The adult communities in Manchester, Berkeley and Lakewood are mostly 1970s and 80s kitchens on the same pattern, and there the practical questions are about disruption more than paint: low-odor materials, a crew that arrives when it said it would, and a kitchen that is back in service as quickly as possible. We stage those jobs so the sink and the refrigerator stay reachable while the doors are off.

At the other end are the rebuilt and raised houses around the lagoons in Brick, Toms River and Bayville, and the newer colonials in Jackson and Lakewood. Those kitchens are usually builder-grade maple or oak with a sound factory finish that is fine and a color nobody chose. They refinish very cleanly. The exception is thermofoil and laminate doors, which turn up in rebuilt kitchens and on some bathroom vanities: they can be painted, but only over a bonding primer made for slick surfaces, and only where the film is not already lifting at the edges. If it is lifting, we say so at the estimate rather than selling you a finish that will peel with it.

Seasonal homes, rentals and timing the job

Ocean County has more empty kitchens in October than almost any county in the state, and that is the best time to refinish one. A second home or summer rental in Point Pleasant, Brick, Stafford or on a Toms River lagoon can be done between Labor Day and the spring with nobody cooking in it, which is ideal for a coating that is still hardening. Spraying a kitchen while a family is living around it is perfectly normal work for us, but it is easier on everyone when the house is quiet.

For year-round homes, the shoulder seasons are the kinder windows for a different reason: the humidity is lower than in July and we are not competing with our own exterior schedule, which fills from late spring. A kitchen refinished in spring or fall typically gets tighter coats and a faster return to service than the same kitchen in August.

Either way the sequence is the same: in-home consultation and door count, teardown and labeling, masking of counters, appliances, backsplash and floors, degrease and scuff-sand, fill and repair, prime, spray, then reassembly and a walkthrough. Most Ocean County kitchens we refinish are a few days of work rather than a few weeks, which is the whole point of refinishing over replacement.

Refinishing, or staining, or refacing

One distinction is worth settling before you spend anything, because it comes up in almost every shore kitchen with a honey or golden oak finish. Refinishing and cabinet painting both mean an opaque enamel sprayed over the boxes and doors you already own, and that is what our cabinet painters do. Staining is a different animal: stain soaks into bare wood, so it cannot go over paint or a factory topcoat, and going darker or changing the wood tone means stripping first, which is slower and costs more than painting. Stain also cannot make oak white.

Refacing β€” new doors and fronts with veneered frames β€” suits sound boxes whose doors are warped or peeling, costs several times what refinishing does, and is a different trade from ours. We will tell you at the estimate which of the three your kitchen actually wants, including when the honest answer is none of them.

β€œI can't say enough about Matthew, Mustafa, Fico et al. They were considerate, professional, and some of the greatest people I've had the pleasure of meeting. They treated my home like their own. They were patient with my requests and so pleasant to work with. I had gotten 3 different estimates for the work, they were all in the same ballpark, however NJ Painting offered a free consultation with an interior designer that was incredible. I went with all her suggestions and my house looks great! I could not be more satisfied with the outcome.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about estimates, scheduling, and getting your home or business professionally painted.

It affects how long it takes to cure, not whether it works. Waterborne cabinet enamels are dry to the touch in hours but keep hardening for weeks; Benjamin Moore says its waterborne alkyd can take up to thirty days to reach full hardness, and damp air over the bay slows that down. We mask and ventilate the spray area, run the air conditioning or a dehumidifier while coats go on and flash off, and space the coats to the conditions in the kitchen that day. Then we ask you to go gently for the first few weeks: no hard scrubbing, shelf liner under anything that slides.

Usually it is the best money in the house. Cabinets from that era were built from solid birch, maple or oak, and the boxes are the expensive part to replace, so refinishing keeps the part that is worth keeping. A galley also has a low door count, which means the spray, rehang and cleanup go quickly. The soffit above the uppers is a decision rather than a problem: it can be finished in the cabinet color so it reads as part of the run, or painted with the walls and ceiling so the cabinets stop at their own line. We will show you both at the estimate.

Yes, and in Ocean County that is the window we recommend. Between Labor Day and the spring a seasonal house in Point Pleasant, Brick, Stafford or on a Toms River lagoon is quiet, the humidity is lower than in midsummer, and the enamel gets its first few weeks of hardening with nobody cooking against it. Give us the dates the house has to be ready and we will work back from them. We only need access and power, not for you to be there.

Sometimes. Thermofoil and laminate doors show up in post-Sandy rebuilds and on a lot of bathroom vanities, and they can be painted over a bonding primer made for slick surfaces β€” but only where the film is still tight. Once the thermofoil has started lifting or peeling at a corner or along an edge, paint will lift with it, and no primer fixes that. We check every door at the estimate and tell you honestly which ones will take a finish, which need replacing, and whether the kitchen is worth refinishing at all.
